G'day From The Outback

Another item crossed off our bucket list:

We went camel riding through Australia's Outback.

Now you may be wondering, there are camels in Australia?  The answer was made quite obvious due to the pictures above, YES!

Thousands of two main species of Australian feral camels, dromedaries and bactrian camels, were imported into Australia.  These camels were imported mainly from India in the 19th century, for transport and construction as a part of the colonization of Central and Western Australia.  This use of camels is no longer seen, as motorized transport replaced the camels role and many were released into the wild!  Since the release of the camels, it is actually very common to see camels in the desert. Not only are there "Kangaroo Crossing" signs but there are "Camel Crossing" signs seen throughout the Outback.

What an experience camel riding the Outback was!

As we rode on camel back through the Simpson Desert of Central Australia, we were awestruck by the colors of the desert. The reflection of the red sands brought out the beautiful cobalt blue dessert sky. Not to mention, the yellows, oranges and pinks that took over the sky as the sun began to set!

Not only did we get to appreciate the incredible landscape around the MacDonnell Ranges we heard the quiet of the bush, the sounds of the birds and the hopping of the kangaroos. It was a fantastic site, watching the mom and her baby kangaroo hop along through the dessert!

Not only did we see wild kangaroos we also saw beautiful big trees, small shrubs, grasses and flowers.  Most impressive of all were the various landforms such as claypans, rocky hills and sandy flats.

Our day was amazing, we felt like true Australians roaming through the Outback!
