Greek Food
The Prison of Socrates

Today was our first lunch in Greece, the food we will be getting used to for the next 20 days of our time through out Greece.  Wow, was it delicious!  The feta cheese was tasty, the Greek salad fresh and the homemade white wine refreshing (my personal favorite).  While eating lunch and enjoying our beautiful day in Athens, we listened to a local Greek band play their traditional favorites.  After lunch, we hit the Greek shops (adding to our collection from around the world) and made our way to the famous Prison of Socrates.

Socrates was a classical Greek Athenian philosopher, credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy.  He is an enigmatic figure known chiefly through the accounts of later classical writers, especially the writings of his students Plato and Xenophon and the plays of his contemporary Aristophanes.   Through his portrayal in Plato's dialogues, Socrates has become renowned for his contribution to the field of ethics, and it is this Platonic Socrates who lends his name to the concepts of Socratic irony and the Socratic method (elenchus).  Plato's Socrates also made important and lasting contributions to the fields of epistemology and logic; the influence of his ideas and approach remains a strong foundation for much western philosophy that followed.

The jail where Socrates was imprisoned is located on Filopapou hillside. We were able to get a glimpse into history at this ancient prison, the Prison of Socrates.

Enjoy the pictures & the blogs to come of our adventures island hopping!  Next, we will be sharing our delicious dinner at a local Greek home in Athens.

  1. Love the photos of the colorful shops through the streets of Athens, and the yummy food, everything looks delicious, from the savory feta to the Greek homemade white wine, not forgetting the Greek homemade ice cream. But, most interesting was to know that you visited the prison of one of the most well-known philosophers in the history of the world. It is said that Socrates stated at his trial that "the unexamined life is not worth living." So he tried to live as wisely as he could and recommended that everyone else do the same...

With Socrates principle in my thoughts I will be seeing you in your next blog.
